Google CEO Sundar Pichai has described 2025 as a pivotal year for the company, urging employees to embrace urgency and focus as Google navigates heightened competition, regulatory challenges, and rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Addressing employees at a strategy meeting on December 18, Sundar Pichai emphasized the need for Google to maintain its position as a leader in technology while delivering meaningful solutions to users.
“We need to internalize the urgency of this moment,” Sundar Pichai said during the meeting, attended by employees both in person at Google’s Mountain View headquarters and virtually. “The stakes are high. These are disruptive moments. In 2025, we must remain relentlessly focused on unlocking the benefits of this technology and solving real user problems.”
The strategy session follows a challenging year for Google, marked by strong revenue growth in search ads and cloud services but intensified competition and internal scrutiny. The rise of generative AI has introduced new competitors, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which launched in late 2022 and has since gained significant traction. Microsoft-backed OpenAI is now valued at $157 billion, and in July, the company announced plans to launch its own search engine. Other competitors, like Perplexity, have also entered the AI-driven search market, further pressuring Google.
Sundar Pichai highlighted Google’s heavy investment in its AI efforts, particularly through its Gemini app. The app, powered by Google’s large language model Gemini, offers advanced tools, including a chatbot. Executives view Gemini as a potential cornerstone for building new business, aiming for it to become the company’s next app to surpass half a billion users. Sundar Pichai described scaling Gemini on the consumer side as a top priority for 2025.
Despite acknowledging that Google has sometimes played catchup, Sundar Pichai expressed confidence in the company’s capabilities. “In history, you don’t always need to be first, but you have to execute well and really be the best in class as a product,” he said.
Google’s challenges also extend to regulatory scrutiny. The company faces legal battles, including a ruling that it illegally holds a monopoly in the search market and allegations of dominating online ad technology. Sundar Pichai acknowledged these pressures, stating, “It’s not lost on me that we are facing scrutiny across the world.”
DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis outlined ambitious plans for Gemini, envisioning a universal assistant capable of seamless operation across domains and devices. With 2025 on the horizon, Google is gearing up to secure its leadership in AI and technological innovation.
