Punjab Kings’ emphatic win over Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025 match in Chandigarh was marred by a disciplinary issue involving Glenn Maxwell, who faced action from the BCCI for breaching the tournament’s code of conduct. While Punjab celebrated a stellar maiden IPL century by young opener Priyansh Arya, Glenn Maxwell’s on-field frustration led to a fine and a demerit point, adding a sour note to the otherwise memorable evening for Punjab.

Glenn Maxwell Penalized for Breaching Conduct

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Tuesday that Glenn Maxwell has been fined 25 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for violating Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct. The incident occurred during Punjab’s clash with Chennai Super Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. Glenn Maxwell admitted to the Level 1 offence, which involves the abuse of fixtures and fittings during a match, and accepted the sanction imposed by the match referee.

Article 2.2 specifically refers to actions such as kicking or hitting wickets, damaging boundary boards, dressing room fittings, or any cricket-related equipment in a manner considered reckless or intentional. The IPL media release clarified that such actions, even when accidental, if done in frustration or anger, would be penalized under this code. In Glenn Maxwell’s case, his actions crossed the acceptable threshold, prompting immediate disciplinary action.

Priyansh Arya’s Century Powers Punjab to Big Win

Amid the controversy, Punjab Kings found a new hero in Priyansh Arya, who delivered a stunning performance with the bat. The young opener, who gained attention during the Delhi Premier League, smashed 103 off just 42 deliveries, including seven fours and nine sixes. His explosive innings helped Punjab post a commanding 219/6 in their 20 overs.

Chennai’s chase was led by Devon Conway, who retired out after scoring 69 off 49 balls. Shivam Dube and Rachin Ravindran contributed with 36 and 42, respectively, but the team struggled to keep up with the rising run rate. Despite a late cameo from MS Dhoni, who scored 27 off 12 balls, Chennai fell short and suffered their fourth consecutive defeat of the season, slipping to the ninth spot on the points table.
