The Gaza Strip remains embroiled in a months-long conflict, with no end in sight and the humanitarian situation deteriorating rapidly, the UN warned on Thursday. Tor Wennesland, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process during a UNSC Meeting painted a grim picture of the region. In his statement, the diplomat described the suffering of Palestinians and the growing risk of a wider crisis.
Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolds:
In his address, Wennesland’s talks of his visit to Gaza and revealed a grim picture of the region. Ever since the crisis hit, there has been acute shortages of food, water, shelter, and medicine, coupled with rising communicable diseases due to unsanitary conditions. The top diplomat described the situation as “unsustainable and desperate,” with a “near total breakdown” in law and order.
UN Aid Hampered, Action Urged:
While the UN has a plan to deliver essential supplies, their ability to do so is severely hampered by limited access, lack of essential equipment, and the need for Israeli approvals. Wennesland emphasized the need for coordinated humanitarian efforts, including deconfliction with all parties and the provision of necessary equipment for safe operation.
Breaking the Cycle of Violence:
The UN envoy issued a strong call for a collective response, urging an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages as first steps. He stressed the need for dialogue to replace violence and emphasized that a lasting solution lies in a political agreement.
Two-State Vision and Palestinian Governance:
Wennesland acknowledged Israel’s security concerns but advocated for a clear path towards restoring a single, effective Palestinian governance across the occupied territories, including Gaza. He also highlighted the importance of international support in strengthening and reforming the Palestinian Authority to improve its legitimacy.
Time-Bound Framework for Peace:
The UN envoy called for a time-bound political framework that aims to end the occupation and negotiate a two-state solution. He emphasized the urgency of these efforts, stating, “These efforts must coalesce and accelerate if we are to emerge from this nightmare into a trajectory that can provide Palestinians and Israelis with the chance of lasting peace.”
