Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has endorsed Gautam Gambhir as a suitable candidate for the head coach position of the Indian cricket team, if he has indeed applied. Recent reports indicate that Gautam Gambhir has expressed interest in the role, prompting internal discussions within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Gautam Gambhir’s recent success in mentoring Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title, with an emphatic 8-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad, has bolstered his candidacy.
Speaking at the inauguration of the International Procurement and Supply Chain Conference, Sourav Ganguly highlighted the advantages of having an Indian coach for the national team. “I am in favour of an Indian coach. If he has applied, Gautam Gambhir will be a good coach,” Sourav Ganguly stated.
The speculation about Gautam Gambhir’s potential appointment intensified mid-way through the IPL 2024 season. The BCCI has been seeking applications for the head coach position, as Rahul Dravid’s tenure is set to conclude in June following the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. The deadline for applications was May 27.
While no formal approach has been made, sources suggest that informal discussions between the BCCI and Gautam Gambhir have progressed. Despite lacking previous coaching experience at the highest level, Gautam Gambhir’s mentorship in the IPL appears to have impressed the decision-makers. His track record as a World Cup-winning player further strengthens his case for the significant role.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah was seen conversing with Gautam Gambhir after KKR’s final win in Chennai, a moment captured by TV cameras, adding to the speculation. Jay Shah has hinted at the preference for an Indian coach in recent statements. “Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and thorough process. We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks,” Jay Shah noted.
As the BCCI evaluates candidates, Gautam Gambhir’s potential appointment as head coach could mark a new chapter for Indian cricket, aligning with the board’s emphasis on experienced domestic candidates.
