As the Parliament’s budget session approaches, scheduled to begin on January 31 and conclude on April 4, all attention is focused on Nirmala Sitharaman as she prepares to make history. Under the Narendra Modi government, Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2025 in February, marking her eighth consecutive budget. This record includes seven full-fledged budgets and an interim one presented in February 2024. She also holds the distinction of delivering the longest budget speech in India’s history—a detailed two-hour and 40-minute address on February 1, 2020.
Nirmala Sitharaman’s journey from her academic pursuits to her role as one of India’s key policymakers is a testament to perseverance and dedication. Born on August 18, 1959, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, she completed her early education and graduated in economics from Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College in Tiruchirapalli. She went on to earn a master’s degree in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, focusing on the Indo-European textile trade for her draft PhD thesis.
Her professional career began in the United Kingdom, where she worked as an economist with the Agricultural Engineers Association and later as a senior manager in research and analysis at Price Waterhouse in London. During this time, she also contributed to the BBC World Service. Upon returning to India, Nirmala Sitharaman became the deputy director at the Centre for Public Policy Studies in Hyderabad and founded ‘Pranava,’ a reputed school in the city. From 2003 to 2005, she served on the National Commission for Women, where she championed women’s empowerment.
Nirmala Sitharaman entered politics in 2008 when she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. She quickly rose through the ranks and became a party spokesperson in 2010, earning recognition for her articulate and effective communication. In 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inducted her into his Cabinet as Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and later assigned her additional responsibilities in finance and corporate affairs. She assumed the role of finance minister in 2019, playing a central role in shaping India’s economic policies.
Nirmala Sitharaman is married to Dr. Parakala Prabhakar, an alumnus of Jawaharlal Nehru University and the London School of Economics. They have one daughter. From her modest beginnings to becoming one of India’s most influential leaders, Nirmala Sitharaman’s story embodies resilience, intellect, and dedication as she prepares to present another historic budget.
