Tamil Nadu is known for its rich and diverse cuisine, which is a perfect blend of spices, flavours, and traditional cooking techniques. Here are some of the most famous and beloved foods from Tamil Nadu:

1. Dosa:

A staple South Indian dish, dosa is a thin, crispy crepe made from fermented rice and lentil batter. It is usually served with sambar (a lentil-based vegetable stew) and coconut chutney.

2. Idli:

Soft and fluffy steamed rice cakes, idlis are a breakfast favourite in Tamil Nadu. They are typically served with sambar, coconut chutney, and tomato chutney.

3. Pongal:

A traditional dish made from rice and moong dal, cooked with ghee, black pepper, and cashews. It is often served during the harvest festival, Pongal, but is also enjoyed as a breakfast dish.

4. Sambar:

A quintessential South Indian dish, sambar is a spicy and tangy lentil-based stew made with vegetables and tamarind. It is often served with idli, dosa, or rice.

5. Chettinad Chicken:

A spicy and flavorful chicken curry from the Chettinad region, made with a blend of aromatic spices, coconut, and curry leaves. It’s one of Tamil Nadu’s most famous non-vegetarian dishes.

6. Parotta:

A flaky, layered flatbread, parotta is commonly served with salna (a spicy gravy) or chicken curry. It’s a popular street food in Tamil Nadu.

7. Rasam:

A tangy, spicy soup made from tamarind juice, tomatoes, pepper, and spices. Rasam is often served as a digestive dish, eaten with rice or consumed on its own.

8. Biryani:

Tamil Nadu’s version of biryani is rich, flavorful, and cooked with aromatic spices and meat (often chicken or mutton). Dindigul and Ambur biryani are popular varieties.

9. Kuzhi Paniyaram:

A bite-sized snack made from fermented rice and lentil batter, paniyaram can be savoury or sweet. The savoury version is spiced with onions, green chillies, and curry leaves.

10. Vada:

Crispy and savoury fritters made from urad dal (black lentils), vadas are typically served with coconut chutney and sambar. Medu vada (soft and round vadas) are especially popular.

11. Filter Coffee:

Tamil Nadu is famous for its strong and aromatic filter coffee, made by brewing finely ground coffee beans with hot water and served with milk and sugar in a metal tumbler and davara.

12. Kothu Parotta:

A street food delicacy, kothu parotta is made by chopping parotta into small pieces and stir-frying it with vegetables, eggs, and meat, along with a spicy gravy.

13. Payasam:

A traditional South Indian dessert, payasam is made with milk, rice or vermicelli, sugar, and flavoured with cardamom, saffron, and dry fruits. It’s often served during festivals and celebrations.

A crunchy and savoury snack made from rice flour, urad dal flour, and sesame seeds, murukku is deep-fried and enjoyed as an anytime snack.

15. Appam:

A soft, fluffy pancake made from fermented rice batter, appam has a spongy centre and crispy edges. It is often served with coconut milk, vegetable stew, or chicken curry.
