Delhi government orders inquiry into Palam fire, announces financial aid for victims’ families, and outlines relief measures following casualties and injuries.

New Delhi, March 18, 2026 — The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into a fire incident in a multi-storey residential building in the Palam area of West Delhi. The incident resulted in multiple casualties and injuries, prompting immediate administrative response and relief measures. The Chief Minister expressed grief over the loss of lives and confirmed that financial assistance will be provided to affected families.

Probe Ordered to Determine Cause

A magisterial inquiry has been initiated to establish the exact cause of the fire. The investigation will examine safety compliance, emergency response timelines, and possible lapses in building infrastructure. Officials have been directed to submit a detailed report within a stipulated timeframe.

The government stated that the findings of the probe will be used to strengthen fire safety enforcement and prevent similar incidents. Authorities are also expected to review existing safety norms for residential buildings, particularly in densely populated areas.

Financial Assistance for Victims

The government announced compensation for families of those who lost their lives in the incident. Families of deceased adults will receive ₹10 lakh each, while families of deceased minors will be provided ₹5 lakh.

Injured individuals will also receive financial support based on the severity of their condition. Those seriously injured have been assured immediate assistance of ₹2 lakh. The relief package is intended to support families facing immediate financial and medical challenges.

Relief and Support Measures

Emergency response teams were deployed to control the fire and evacuate residents. Medical assistance was provided to the injured, and local authorities coordinated rescue operations at the site.

The government stated that all necessary support will be extended to affected families, including medical care and rehabilitation assistance where required. Departments concerned have been instructed to ensure timely disbursal of compensation and continued monitoring of victims’ conditions.

Focus on Safety and Accountability

The administration indicated that accountability will be fixed based on the findings of the inquiry. Any violations of safety norms or negligence identified during the investigation will be addressed through appropriate action.

The incident has also prompted a review of fire preparedness mechanisms in residential areas. Authorities are expected to conduct inspections and awareness initiatives to improve compliance with fire safety regulations.

The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety standards and providing assistance to affected families, while taking steps to reduce risks of similar incidents in the future.
