  • Kantilal Bhuria clarifies "two wives" remark as sarcastic response.
  • Controversy arises during election campaign in Madhya Pradesh.

Former Union Minister and Congress’ Lok Sabha candidate from Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, Kantilal Bhuria, found himself embroiled in controversy following his recent “two wives” remark. The statement, made during a poll rally in Sailana, sparked a sharp reaction from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and prompted calls for action from the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Addressing the gathering, Kantilal Bhuria claimed that men with two wives could benefit from his party’s Mahalaxmi scheme, which purportedly offers Rs 2 lakh to such individuals. This assertion stirred uproar and drew immediate criticism from political opponents and the public alike.

In response to the backlash, Kantilal Bhuria issued a clarification, stating that his comment was intended sarcastically in response to a question posed by a tribal man. He emphasized that the query, regarding whether individuals with two wives would receive benefits, was raised during a meeting, and his response was merely a sarcastic retort. Kantilal Bhuria highlighted the legality of polygamy in tribal societies, indicating that his response was contextual and not a serious policy proposal.

According to Kantilal Bhuria’s clarification, the Congress party’s manifesto pledges to provide Rs 1 lakh annually to every woman, to be deposited directly into their bank accounts. He reiterated that this initiative aims to empower women economically and ensure their financial independence.

Facing opposition from BJP’s Anita Chauhan, wife of Madhya Pradesh Forest Minister Nagar Singh Chauhan, Kantilal Bhuria defended his candidacy amidst the controversy. The electoral contest in Ratlam has intensified ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls scheduled for May 13.

Kantilal Bhuria’s explanation attempts to quell the controversy surrounding his remarks, which had led to concerns about the appropriateness and implications of his statement. As the political landscape in Madhya Pradesh becomes increasingly charged in the lead-up to the elections, Kantilal Bhuria’s clarification aims to address the misconceptions and criticisms arising from his contentious statement.

The incident underscores the delicate nature of political discourse during election campaigns and the importance of clear communication by candidates. While Kantilal Bhuria seeks to move past the controversy and focus on his electoral campaign, the fallout from his remarks continues to reverberate in the political arena.
