The US Secret Service has significantly increased security for former President Donald Trump following intelligence reports of an Iranian assassination plot, according to US media on Tuesday. The enhanced measures were implemented weeks before a recent shooting incident at a former President Donald Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
CNN reported that US authorities received intelligence from a “human source” indicating Tehran’s plan to target former President Donald Trump. This prompted the Secret Service to boost his protection. Multiple US media outlets corroborated the existence of the plot, though it was not linked to the Butler shooting incident.
The recent shooting at the Pennsylvania rally, carried out by gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, left former President Donald Trump wounded and resulted in the death of a rally attendee. The US National Security Council (NSC) stated there was no connection between the shooter and any foreign or domestic accomplices.
NSC spokeswoman Adrienne Watson emphasized that the agency has been “tracking Iranian threats against former former President Donald Trump administration officials for years” as part of Tehran’s retaliation for the 2020 killing of Revolutionary Guards commander Qasem Soleimani. Watson described the matter as a top priority for national and homeland security.
The investigation into the Butler shooting remains ongoing, with authorities yet to identify any co-conspirators involved with Crooks. Watson referred questions regarding the additional security measures to the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Anthony Guglielmi, the top Secret Service spokesman, stated that the agency continuously receives and assesses new threat information, adjusting resources as necessary. Guglielmi reiterated the agency’s commitment to taking threats seriously and responding appropriately, though he declined to comment on specific threats. The DHS has not provided an immediate response.
This development comes amid intense scrutiny of the Secret Service’s handling of the Butler shooting, where questions have been raised about how Crooks managed to open fire on former President Donald Trump from an exposed rooftop approximately 150 meters (500 feet) away. President Joe Biden has ordered an independent review of the Secret Service’s response to the incident.
As investigations continue, the heightened security for former President Donald Trump underscores ongoing concerns over potential threats to his safety, particularly from foreign adversaries. The incident has sparked a broader discussion on the effectiveness of protective measures for high-profile political figures in the US.
