A Florida man, Michael Fleming, has been arrested and charged with felony robbery after allegedly attempting to withdraw just 1 cent from a Chase Bank branch in Sumter County, as reported by the New York Post. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon at the bank located on US-441 in Lady Lake, according to an arrest affidavit from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
Fleming reportedly entered the bank and filled out a withdrawal slip for a mere penny, which he handed to a bank teller. When informed by the teller that such a small amount couldn’t be withdrawn, Fleming allegedly responded by making a threatening remark, prompting the teller to fear for their safety and alert law enforcement.
Deputies responded to the scene promptly and found Fleming still inside the bank. He was subsequently taken into custody without incident. After being read his Miranda Rights, Fleming agreed to speak with deputies, although specific details of that conversation were redacted from the affidavit.
Based on their investigation, deputies determined that Fleming’s actions violated Florida’s robbery laws, leading to his arrest and subsequent booking at the Sumter County Detention Center. As of Tuesday afternoon, he remains in custody on a $5,000 bond, according to online jail records.
The bizarre incident has drawn attention for its unusual circumstances and the severity of the charge against Fleming, underscoring the legal consequences even for seemingly minor infractions.
