In a horrifying New Year’s Day attack, United States Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar drove a pickup truck into a crowded street in New Orleans’ iconic French Quarter, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched a probe into potential ties to terrorism after an Islamic State flag was discovered in the vehicle. Jabbar was fatally shot by police during the incident.
Authorities described the rampage as an act of deliberate carnage. New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated that Jabbar was “hell-bent on causing as much destruction as possible” as he plowed through the crowded streets filled with revelers celebrating the start of 2025. Witnesses likened the scene to a war zone, with bodies thrown into the air and victims crying in shock amidst blood and debris.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a United States citizen from Texas, served over a decade in the military as a human resources and IT specialist, including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2009–2010. The Pentagon confirmed his military service but provided no further comment. The FBI is investigating whether Jabbar acted alone or in coordination with others, citing the discovery of the Islamic State flag as a critical lead.
Jabbar had a modest criminal history, with prior charges for theft and driving with an invalid license. A YouTube video from four years ago shows him advertising property management services, describing himself as a “fierce negotiator.” Reports indicate financial struggles, including significant debt and the loss of over $28,000 through his real estate business in 2022. His second marriage ended in divorce that same year.
The attack drew swift condemnation from leaders worldwide. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed solidarity with the victims, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the violence as intolerable. United States President Joe Biden vowed that such attacks would not be tolerated, emphasizing the need for unity against violence. President-elect Donald Trump linked the tragedy to immigration policies, though the FBI has not confirmed any connection to immigration.
In a separate incident in Las Vegas, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside a Trump-owned hotel, killing one and injuring seven. While authorities believe the events are unrelated, Elon Musk suggested a possible connection, highlighting that both vehicles were rented through the platform Turo. Investigations into both incidents continue.
