Gateway Pundit, a far-right media outlet notorious for promoting unfounded conspiracy theories, including the baseless claim that the 2020 US presidential election was rigged, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The move comes as the outlet faces a barrage of defamation lawsuits, signaling a significant legal and financial setback for the organization.
Jim Hoft, the founder of Gateway Pundit, announced the bankruptcy filing in a statement on Wednesday, attributing it to what he described as “progressive liberal lawfare attacks” against the outlet. Jim Hoft emphasized that the decision to seek bankruptcy protection was a strategic move aimed at consolidating litigation and facilitating resolution in a single court.
“This is not an admission of fault or culpability,” Hoft stated, underscoring that the bankruptcy filing was a common tool for reorganization amidst legal challenges. Despite the mounting legal pressures, Jim Hoft reaffirmed Gateway Pundit’s commitment to its mission of providing independent news coverage and vowed to persevere against attempts to silence the outlet.
Gateway Pundit has been embroiled in a series of defamation lawsuits, with multiple parties alleging that the outlet propagated false and defamatory claims. Among the plaintiffs are two poll workers in Georgia and a former employee of a voting machine company, who were falsely accused by Gateway Pundit of involvement in election fraud to benefit President Joe Biden.
Founded in 2004, Gateway Pundit quickly rose to prominence as a prominent news source within conservative and far-right circles, garnering significant influence and readership. However, the outlet’s reputation has been marred by its dissemination of falsehoods, including the misidentification of the perpetrator of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting and the promotion of the debunked “birther” conspiracy theory targeting former President Barack Obama.
In response to Gateway Pundit’s repeated violations of its misinformation policies, google took action in 2021 by suspending online advertisement revenues for the outlet. The move further compounded Gateway Pundit’s financial challenges, underscoring the consequences of perpetuating false information in the digital media landscape.
The bankruptcy filing marks a significant development in the ongoing scrutiny of far-right media outlets and their dissemination of misinformation.
