Tensions have escalated in West Asia following reported explosions in Iran’s Isfahan province, days after Iran’s drone strike on Israel raised fears of a significant conflict in the region. While Israeli authorities have not confirmed any involvement, Iran’s state media downplayed claims of an attack on a military site.
According to reports, Iran’s Fars news agency mentioned “three explosions” near the Shekari army airbase in Isfahan province. However, Iran’s space agency spokesperson Hossein Dalirian stated that there was “no missile attack for now” and several drones were shot down. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed no damage to Iran’s nuclear sites.
Iranian state media reported activation of air defense systems in multiple cities and flight disruptions to Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz. However, Iranian television showed normal traffic conditions in Isfahan. The Isfahan province, home to nuclear facilities and a fleet of US-made F-14 Tomcats, has been previously targeted by suspected Israeli sabotage attacks.
The reported strike in Isfahan follows Iran’s warning of retaliatory action against Israel’s nuclear sites. While Israel has not officially commented on the incident, US media reports suggest Washington received advance notice but did not endorse the strike.
The situation remains tense, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warning of a potential full-scale regional conflict amidst ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The world anxiously awaits further developments in the volatile region.
