Sakshi Pandey, a woman from rural Madhya Pradesh, has become a symbol of empowerment in her community after completing a 15-day training course on drone technology. Once earning a modest income from a conventional job, she now operates agricultural drones, earning Rs 25,000 a month. Sakshi Pandey’s transformation is part of a larger initiative under the Drone Didi scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed at providing rural women with the skills to operate drones, ultimately improving their livelihoods and creating opportunities for self-reliance.
In 2023, Sakshi Pandey participated in an intensive training program provided by the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO). She learned how to operate drones to apply fertilizers like Nano Urea and Nano DAP, revolutionizing the way farmers work in the fields. Previously, tasks such as spraying fertilizers could take hours; with drones, these tasks are completed in just five minutes per acre. The technology also boosts efficiency by ensuring 100% fertilizer efficacy and saving up to 80% of water.
Her success story goes beyond her personal gains. Sakshi Pandey has trained more than 200 women in Gwalior and Mansar, Haryana, empowering them with the same drone skills that have changed her life. IFFCO also awarded her a drone, further enhancing her capacity to serve local farmers, who can now easily book drone services through the IFFCO Udaan app. This seamless integration of technology and farming has created a more efficient and sustainable way of crop fertilization, benefiting both farmers and the environment.
The scheme isn’t just about technology; it’s about offering rural women the tools to break free from the limitations of traditional roles.
