The integration of modern technology in agriculture is pivotal for increasing productivity and ensuring sustainable farming practices. In this endeavor, the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) emerges as a significant initiative aimed at empowering farmers with advanced tools and techniques.
One of the key aspects of agricultural mechanization is the utilization of drones, which offer numerous benefits such as increased efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and reduced human exposure to hazardous chemicals. Recognizing the potential of drones in agriculture, the SMAM provides financial assistance for their purchase and demonstration on farmers’ fields. Institutes under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Farm Machinery Training & Testing Institutes, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and State Agriculture Universities (SAUs) are instrumental in implementing this scheme.
Under the SMAM, financial support is extended to various stakeholders, including Farmers Producers Organizations (FPOs), Cooperative Societies, and rural entrepreneurs, to promote the adoption of drones in agriculture. The scheme also focuses on providing drones on rental basis, facilitating access to advanced technology for small and marginal farmers, women, and farmers in North Eastern states.
The impact of SMAM is evident through the allocation of funds for drone promotion, procurement, and training across the country. Notably, funds have been released for the purchase of drones and establishment of drone Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs), ensuring widespread access to drone services for farmers.
In addition to drones, the SMAM encompasses a comprehensive strategy to promote farm mechanization, including training, testing, and demonstration of farm machinery. Custom Hiring Centres, Farm Machinery Banks, and High-Tech Equipment Hubs are established to facilitate the availability of machinery for farmers, especially in low-mechanized regions.
Furthermore, the recent approval of the Central Sector Scheme for providing drones to Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) underscores the government’s commitment to empowering women in agriculture. This scheme aims to enhance efficiency, crop yield, and income generation opportunities for SHGs, contributing to overall socio-economic development.
Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization is a testament to the government’s efforts towards modernizing agriculture and improving the livelihoods of farmers. By leveraging technology and promoting mechanization, the scheme endeavors to usher in a new era of prosperity in the agricultural sector.
