It has been a year since Elon Musk assumed control of Twitter, now rebranded as X, and the platform is rolling out a new set of features. Musk announced the introduction of audio and video call capabilities on the platform in a recent tweet, stating, “Early version of video & audio calling on 𝕏.” The feature is initially available on iOS and will soon be accessible to Android users.

Users can enable the feature within the app’s settings, allowing them to toggle it on or off. X offers a range of options for managing audio and video calls, including the ability to allow calls from people in one’s address book, individuals they follow, verified users, or a combination of these. To initiate a call, users can simply open a Direct Message (DM) with another user, tap the phone icon in the top right corner, and select either audio or video call, The Verge reported.
From Twitter to now ‘X’:
Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter and its transformation into X has been marked by his vision to turn the platform into a super-app, offering a wide array of services encompassing messaging, social networking, and even peer-to-peer payments. Earlier this year, Musk had teased the introduction of audio and video calling features, assuring users that they would not require a phone number to use these features, which are slated to be available on both Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android platforms, as well as personal computers.
In terms of functionality, all X accounts can receive calls, but the ability to make audio and video calls is currently reserved for premium subscribers. Users have control over who can call them, with default settings allowing calls from accounts they follow or have in their address book. Additionally, a previous Direct Message exchange is required to initiate a call with another user.
