Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has invested $75 million into a political action committee (PAC) in support of former U.S. President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential candidate. The sizable contribution, revealed through a federal disclosure on Tuesday, underscores Elon Musk’s growing influence in U.S. politics and his support for Donald Trump’s bid to reclaim the White House in the November 5 election, where Donald Trump will face off against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Elon Musk, known for his ventures with Tesla, SpaceX, and social media platform X (formerly Twitter), has emerged as a key figure in Donald Trump’s campaign. The funds were directed toward a PAC Elon Musk created, named America PAC, which is dedicated to promoting values that Elon Musk himself advocates for, including secure borders, sensible government spending, safe cities, a fair justice system, free speech, and the right to self-protection.
Speaking to right-wing personality Tucker Carlson earlier this month, Elon Musk said that America PAC was established to support the “core values” he believes in. The group has been heavily involved in voter mobilization and canvassing efforts, particularly in battleground states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada, and Arizona. By October 9, America PAC had already spent $87 million on the 2024 election, focusing on these critical states that could determine the election outcome.
Elon Musk’s involvement in the race took a more personal turn earlier this year when he publicly endorsed Donald Trump following an assassination attempt on the former president in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July. Elon Musk later joined Donald Trump at a rally in Butler in October, where he donned a black “Make America Great Again” hat, stating, “As you can see, I am not just MAGA. I am dark MAGA.” At the rally, Elon Musk criticized Democrats, accusing them of wanting to take away fundamental rights such as free speech and the right to bear arms.
Donald Trump has frequently referenced Elon Musk’s endorsement on the campaign trail and has even promised to appoint Elon Musk to a newly envisioned government efficiency commission if he wins the election. This further cements Elon Musk’s position as a powerful supporter of Donald Trump’s candidacy.
Elon Musk’s substantial financial backing reflects the broader role of mega-donors in U.S. politics, particularly since the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United ruling. The decision allowed corporations and wealthy individuals to contribute unlimited amounts to PACs and super PACs, which can spend heavily to influence elections without directly coordinating with campaigns. This has resulted in a surge in political spending and the increased presence of “dark money” in U.S. elections.
