  • Advocates for skilled trades over four-year academic degrees.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has reignited the debate over the value of traditional college education, describing it as “overrated.” During an event in Philadelphia supporting Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, Elon Musk voiced his opinion that many students accumulate large amounts of debt during their college years without acquiring practical skills. Elon Musk, who holds degrees in physics and economics, emphasized that success doesn’t necessarily require a four-year college degree.

Elon Musk’s remarks come as part of his ongoing criticism of the traditional education system. He argued that hands-on professions such as electricians, plumbers, and carpenters play a more vital role in society than certain academic degrees. “Too many people spend four years, accumulate a ton of debt, and often don’t have useful skills they can apply afterward. I have a lot of respect for people who work with their hands, and we need electricians and plumbers and carpenters. That’s a lot more important than having incremental political science majors,” Elon Musk said. He urged society to rethink the notion that a four-year college degree is essential for success.

Elon Musk has long been skeptical of formal education. In 2019, he tweeted that a college degree is not required to work at his companies, including Tesla. He expanded on this idea during the 2020 Satellite Conference, where he highlighted that most knowledge is now accessible for free, making college less necessary for learning. “You don’t need college to learn stuff. Everything is available basically for free,” Elon Musk stated. While he acknowledged the social benefits of attending college, he downplayed its role in actual learning, saying, “Colleges are basically for fun and to prove you can do your chores. But they’re not for learning.”

Elon Musk’s views sparked significant discussion on social media platform X, where users debated the relevance of traditional education in the modern world. Some agreed with Elon Musk’s stance, pointing out that the current education system has become costly and ineffective for many students. One user wrote, “College degrees have their place, but college isn’t for everyone. The whole system has been watered down.”

Others, however, raised questions about the role of formal education in securing high-paying jobs at Elon Musk’s own companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and XAI. Despite this, Elon Musk’s views align with other tech leaders, such as Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai, who prioritize practical skills and hands-on experience over conventional academic credentials. The debate continues, with many calling for a reevaluation of the education system’s role in preparing people for successful careers.
