Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Wednesday welcomed a delegation from the United Kingdom House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, led by its Chair, Alicia Kearns. The meeting, attended by the British Ambassador in Cairo, focused on a comprehensive exchange of views regarding the situation in the region, notably the conditions in the Gaza Strip.
Counselor Dr. Ahmed Fahmy, spokesperson for the Presidency, highlighted the UK delegation’s keen interest in gaining insights into Egypt’s vision concerning regional dynamics. President El-Sisi provided an overview of Egypt’s persistent endeavors to broker a ceasefire agreement, facilitate the release of hostages and detainees, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He stressed the imperative for the international community to shoulder its responsibility in safeguarding Palestinians from the dire humanitarian crisis they face. El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance through the Rafah border crossing and airlifts to the most affected areas in northern Gaza, emphasizing the urgency of reaching conclusive agreements on a ceasefire to address the catastrophic conditions prevailing in the region.
Addressing the broader regional context, President El-Sisi affirmed that a lasting and equitable solution to Middle East tensions lies in the establishment of an independent Palestinian State, aligning with international legitimacy resolutions. He cautioned against the escalation of conflicts, particularly highlighting security concerns in the Red Sea and Bab-El-Mandeb Strait.
The meeting also delved into ongoing regional crises, with President El-Sisi emphasizing the importance of bolstering nation-states’ structures and reinforcing their institutions to combat terrorism effectively and achieve stability. Egypt’s unwavering support for regional states in fulfilling their citizens’ aspirations for security and stability was underscored as pivotal in overcoming prevailing crises.
In response, Chair Alicia Kearns and delegation members expressed profound appreciation for Egypt’s balanced and responsible approach in addressing regional turmoil and conflicts. They reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s efforts in facilitating a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza and fostering peace initiatives in the region.
Moreover, bilateral relations between Egypt and the United Kingdom were also a focal point of discussion, with both sides acknowledging the positive and ongoing progress achieved across various spheres.
