In a significant development in the ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials have located a luxurious bungalow linked to the former principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The sprawling two-story property, named ‘Sangeetasandip Villa’ after Ghosh and his wife Sangeeta, is situated in Canning and surrounded by expansive tracts of vacant land.
Local residents, who refer to the property as “Doctor Babu’s house,” report frequently seeing Ghosh and his family at the residence. They also allege that several farmhouses have been constructed in the vicinity under Ghosh’s directives, accusing him of acquiring large areas of land in the region.
The discovery of the bungalow comes as part of broader ED raids targeting multiple locations in Kolkata and its suburbs, including residences and properties associated with Ghosh’s relatives. These actions are part of a comprehensive investigation into financial misconduct at the medical institution during Ghosh’s tenure as principal.
Earlier this month, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took Ghosh into custody along with three associates following allegations of corruption. The accusations, initially brought forward by Dr. Akhtar Ali, a former deputy superintendent at RG Kar, include wastage of government funds, nepotism, and irregularities in vendor selection and recruitment processes. Ali also suggested that the corruption might be linked to the tragic death of a trainee doctor who was reportedly aware of the misconduct.
Additionally, the Supreme Court recently dismissed a plea by Ghosh to be added as a party to the corruption case, following a Calcutta High Court order. The court clarified that Ghosh, as an accused, does not possess the legal right to intervene in the proceedings. This legal setback underscores the intensifying judicial scrutiny surrounding the former principal and the broader implications for governance at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
