In a bold move that has sparked widespread attention, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 100 percent tariff on all movies produced outside the United States, citing national security concerns and the decline of the American film industry. Donald Trump also revealed plans to reopen the historic Alcatraz prison, calling for a tougher approach to violent crime in the country.
In a statement on Truth Social, Donald Trump accused other countries of luring American filmmakers with incentives, resulting in a sharp decline in domestic film production. He declared that foreign-produced movies pose not just an economic threat but also a national security risk through propaganda and messaging.
“The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death,” Donald Trump posted. “Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood and many other areas within the USA are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat.”
Tariff to Boost Domestic Film Production
Donald Trump said he had authorized the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to immediately begin the process of enforcing a 100 percent tariff on any foreign-produced films entering the U.S. market.
“WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!” he emphasized in his post. The move is aimed at encouraging studios and filmmakers to operate within the U.S. and revitalize the local entertainment economy.
Alcatraz Prison to Be Rebuilt and Reopened
In a separate announcement, Donald Trump directed the Bureau of Prisons to rebuild and reopen Alcatraz, the infamous island prison located in the San Francisco Bay. Originally closed in 1963, Alcatraz housed some of America’s most dangerous criminals, including Al Capone.
“REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ!” Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social. He stated that the reopening is necessary to detain the most ruthless and violent offenders far from the public. Donald Trump said the Bureau of Prisons would coordinate with the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security to ensure the new facility is substantially larger and more secure.
These announcements come amid Donald Trump’s broader campaign to position himself as a strong leader focused on national security and law enforcement, as the country approaches the next presidential election cycle.
