A tragic stampede outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium during celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory resulted in the deaths of 11 people and injuries to over 30 others. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar expressed deep regret over the incident, revealing that while the stadium’s official capacity is 35,000, more than three lakh people had gathered in and around the area, leading to chaos and crowd control failures. The government has responded by announcing compensation for victims’ families and initiating inquiries to understand what went wrong.
Massive Crowd and Safety Failures
The stampede occurred as tens of thousands of enthusiastic fans gathered to celebrate RCB’s first-ever IPL title. DK Shivakumar stated that the stadium gates were broken due to overwhelming crowd pressure, causing panic and the tragic crush. “This should not have happened, and we never expected such a huge crowd,” he said, apologizing sincerely for the loss of lives and the unfortunate incident. The sudden influx of more than 3 lakh people far exceeded the stadium’s 35,000 seating capacity, creating an uncontrollable and dangerous situation. The Deputy Chief Minister also mentioned his discussions with police officials and assured that he would personally visit hospitals to check on the injured.
Government’s Response and Compensation
In response to the tragedy, the Karnataka government announced ₹10 lakh compensation for each family of the deceased. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the incident and confirmed a magisterial inquiry to investigate the causes and lapses leading to the stampede. The government has also promised free medical treatment for those injured in the chaos. In light of the incident, all government events scheduled for the following day, including World Environment Day celebrations, were postponed, with the exception of a cabinet meeting.
DK Shivakumar expressed frustration over the politicization of the tragedy by opposition parties but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to learning from the incident to prevent any future recurrence. The RCB team’s victory celebrations were abruptly overshadowed by the fatal incident, marking a somber moment amid what was meant to be a joyous occasion for cricket fans in Bengaluru.
