Officials confirmed on Tuesday that an FIR has been filed against 2 individuals, including an independent candidate, for allegedly obstructing peaceful voting at a polling station during the Lok Sabha elections in Srinagar.
The complaint, lodged by sector magistrate Sarfaraz Ahmad of the Mehjoor Nagar polling booth, named independent candidate Jibran Dar and his supporter Sujata Bashir as the accused.
The Srinagar parliamentary constituency went to polls in the fourth phase on May 13, witnessing a turnout of nearly 38 per cent, marking one of the highest percentages in decades.
The FIR accuses the independent candidate of disrupting the polling process, threatening polling staff, and obstructing voters by blocking the main road.
Jibran Dar and Sujata Bashir face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, obstructing public servants, and assault to deter public servants from duty. Additionally, they are charged under Section 132 of the Representation of People’s Act for misconduct at the polling station.
