In a significant diplomatic encounter, Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani engaged in discussions with President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Nechervan Barzani, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. The meeting focused on fostering bilateral cooperation and addressing pressing regional concerns.
During the exchange, both leaders delved into various topics, including the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the intricacies of negotiations, while also addressing the escalating tensions in the broader Middle East region. Their dialogue underscored the importance of mutual understanding and collaboration in navigating complex geopolitical challenges.
It is pertinent to note that there has been the escalation of tensions in the Middle East region since the eruption of the recent Israel-Palestine conflict in early October. The involvement of Iran-backed fighters in intensifying attacks on U.S. military assets and international commercial interests in the region has raised significant alarm. The US, UK and along with other friendly allies have too intensified its counter strikes to contain Houthi’s operations against commercial and military ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Moreover, prior to this diplomatic engagement, the U.S. military had initiated targeted strikes on numerous sites operated by Iran-backed militias in western Iraq and eastern Syria. These strikes were carried out in response to a drone attack in Jordan, which resulted in the loss of three U.S. service members and left several others wounded in late January. The attack had raised international condemnation from the regional nations, affirming the US to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq and Syria.
