As the Jharkhand Assembly elections approach, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has stirred controversy by labeling the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as “anti-tribal.” During a rally in Ranchi, Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP, accusing the party of referring to tribals as “Vanvasi” and alleging that India’s education system provides only “10-15 lines” about the history of tribal communities. However, this statement seems to have backfired, as the BJP swiftly responded, pointing out Congress’s own historical neglect of tribal figures, from Birsa Munda to India’s first tribal President, Droupadi Murmu.
BJP’s Counterattack: Congress’s Role in Education and Tribal History
The BJP was quick to seize the opportunity to turn the tables on Congress. Party leaders highlighted that the very education system Rahul Gandhi criticized was largely developed during Congress rule. BJP leaders stated, “It was Congress that failed to include significant tribal figures like Birsa Munda and Droupadi Murmu in the nation’s curriculum. Now, Congress is attacking the same system it created.”
Rahul Gandhi’s comments have given BJP leaders, including Babulal Marandi, an opening to criticize Congress’s historical record on tribal rights. Marandi remarked, “Congress and the Gandhi family have long ignored the history and contributions of tribal communities. Even when Rahul Gandhi was in school under Congress rule, tribal history was not given due prominence in textbooks. This injustice occurred under Congress’s governance, where the rich legacy of tribal communities was sidelined.”
Congress Faces Criticism for Neglecting Birsa Munda and Droupadi Murmu
The BJP reminded Rahul Gandhi of his party’s historical shortcomings, particularly regarding the great tribal leader Birsa Munda. Birsa Munda, who fought for the rights and freedom of tribal communities, was largely overlooked during Congress rule. According to BJP leaders, no Congress leader or Prime Minister ever visited his village to honor his sacrifice.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, however, has made it a point to rectify this oversight. Narendra Modi became the first sitting PM to visit Birsa Munda’s village, paying tribute to the tribal leader’s legacy. The BJP has also announced plans to dedicate the year 2025 to commemorating Birsa Munda’s contributions, ensuring his story reaches every corner of the nation.
Rahul Gandhi’s mention of President Droupadi Murmu in his speech also sparked criticism. He accused the BJP of not inviting her to the Ram Temple inauguration ceremony but conveniently overlooked the fact that Congress had fielded Yashwant Sinha against her in the 2022 Presidential election. Social media users were quick to point out this contradiction, questioning Congress’s sincerity toward tribal representation.
The BJP’s Role in the Creation of Jharkhand
In his effort to appeal to tribal sentiments, Rahul Gandhi seems to have forgotten that it was the BJP that played a pivotal role in the creation of Jharkhand. During the formation of the state, Congress ally and RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav had famously declared, “Jharkhand will be created over my dead body,” vehemently opposing its formation.
Prominent tribal leader Champai Soren also criticized Congress’s past actions, stating, “Congress crushed the Jharkhand movement. In the 1951 Census, tribals were given respect, but by 1961, their significance was diminished. Congress has never been a true well-wisher of Jharkhand’s tribal communities.”
Allegations of Corruption and Land Grabbing Against Congress and Its Allies
As the Jharkhand elections draw near, Congress is facing additional challenges. Allegations of land grabbing from tribal communities have been leveled against Congress ally and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Meanwhile, Congress has also been implicated in financial irregularities in Karnataka’s Maharishi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation (KMVSTDC). It has been alleged that funds meant for tribal development were misused during the Bellary Lok Sabha elections, further damaging Congress’s reputation.
Congress’s role in facilitating illegal migration in Jharkhand’s Santhal Pargana region has also come under scrutiny, with the Jharkhand High Court reprimanding the Hemant Soren government over the issue. The declining tribal population in the region has raised concerns, further fueling BJP’s narrative of Congress neglecting tribal rights.
BJP to Leverage Tribal Narrative in Jharkhand Elections
Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks have reignited BJP’s criticism of Congress’s historical treatment of tribal communities. As the BJP continues to highlight the legacy of Birsa Munda and the role of President Droupadi Murmu, the party will likely use this narrative to gain support in the upcoming Jharkhand elections.
With allegations of corruption and land grabbing against Congress and its allies, the party faces an uphill battle in securing tribal votes. The Jharkhand elections are shaping up to be a critical test for the Congress party as it navigates growing challenges and political contradictions.
