Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, experienced an assault by a man in central Copenhagen on Friday evening. Fortunately, Mette Frederiksen emerged unharmed from the incident, as reported by a local resident to Reuters.
In an official statement, Mette Frederiksen’s office confirmed the assault, revealing that it occurred at Kultorvet square. The assailant was promptly apprehended following the attack. While the Prime Minister was visibly shaken, she did not sustain any apparent injuries.
Law enforcement authorities, although acknowledging the incident, have refrained from disclosing further details regarding the assault. Eyewitnesses, including Soren Kjergaard, a barista at the square, noted Mette Frederiksen’s apparent distress as she was escorted away by security personnel.
The assault on Mette Frederiksen comes just days before the scheduled EU election in Denmark, adding to the heightened tension surrounding the political landscape. The incident also recalls recent similar events, notably the assassination attempt on Slovakia’s Prime Minister, Robert Fico, three weeks prior.
Reacting to the attack, Danish Minister of Environment, Magnus Heunicke, expressed solidarity with Mette Frederiksen, acknowledging the shock and concern shared by those in her immediate circle.
The incident underscores the importance of ensuring the safety and security of public figures, particularly during sensitive political periods.
