In response to the alarming increase in froth and pollution in the Yamuna River, Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has formally requested intervention from the Central government. On Friday, the Delhi administration urged the Centre to direct the state governments of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to take immediate action against industries that are reportedly discharging untreated industrial waste into the Yamuna.
The AAP government expressed serious concern over the sudden surge in pollution levels, attributing the issue to excessive industrial residue flowing into the river from neighboring states. According to a statement from the Delhi government, this environmental crisis has emerged due to the unregulated release of industrial byproducts from industries located in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, which eventually make their way into Delhi through the Yamuna River.
The AAP has called for the Centre to implement stringent measures to prevent these states’ industries from polluting the river without adequate treatment of their waste. The party emphasized the critical importance of the Yamuna to Delhi, describing it as a vital resource for the city’s daily needs. They criticized the Central government’s handling of the situation, alleging that the BJP-led administration has been obstructing efforts to address the pollution crisis effectively.
Furthermore, the AAP has demanded that the Central government issue clear and forceful directives to the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana governments to impose an immediate ban on industries that contribute to the river’s pollution. The party believes that only such decisive actions can restore the Yamuna’s health and safeguard it for the people of Delhi.
