Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks during a parliamentary discussion on the Constitution have ignited a heated debate between the BJP and Congress. Shah criticized Congress, accusing it of invoking Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s name without adhering to his principles.
Addressing the Parliament, Shah remarked, “It has become a fashion now—Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If they had chanted God’s name as much, they’d earn a place in heaven for seven lifetimes.” This statement has drawn sharp reactions from Congress, which claims it is an insult to the architect of the Indian Constitution.
The BJP, however, defended Shah’s comments, alleging that Congress has disrespected Ambedkar since the Nehru era. The party emphasized its role in honoring Ambedkar’s legacy and implementing his policies. BJP leaders have highlighted initiatives like building memorials and promoting social justice schemes inspired by Ambedkar’s vision.
Congress, on the other hand, has accused the BJP of using Ambedkar’s name to gain political mileage while failing to uphold his ideals of equality and inclusivity. Party spokespersons called Shah’s remarks “insensitive” and claimed they reflect the BJP’s lack of respect for the Dalit icon.
The controversy has once again brought Ambedkar’s ideology into the political spotlight, with both parties claiming to represent his legacy. As the debate intensifies, public discourse on Ambedkar’s contributions and their relevance in contemporary politics continues to grow.
