Death toll in Kallakurichi hooch tragedy rises to 50: Tamil Nadu Health Minister Subramanian Ma

Kallakurichi (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 22 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Health Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Subramanian Ma on Friday said that 50 people lost their lives in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy after consuming methanol mixed with poisonous illicit liquor that took place on June 19.

The Tamil Nadu Health Minister met the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy victims at Government Medical College and Hospital and inquired about the treatment being provided to them.

“Till now 185 people have been hospitalised at four hospitals, Kallakurichi Hospital, JIPMER Hospital in Puducherry, Salem government hospital, and Viluppuram Government Hospital. Till now, 50 people have died. Our higher officials have been here for the past three days and are continuously monitoring the situation,” the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader said.

“CM has taken quick action in the incident. Today also CM clarified in the Tamil Nadu Assembly session. Today we met people admitted to JIPMER Hospital in Puducherry and Kallakurichi Hospital. After this, we are going to Salem Hospital and will enquire about their health situation. CM has announced 10 lakhs for those who lost their life. Whereas the sports minister Udhayanidhi Stalin also came here yesterday (Thursday) and met with the family members and gave money to them,” he added.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday said the state government will take care of the entire education and hostel expenses of children who have lost either one or both of their parents in the Kallakuruchi hooch tragedy.

Speaking in the Assembly today, the chief minister said that 47 people had died in the June 19 incident in Kallakurichi after consuming methanol mixed with poisonous illicit liquor.

Terming it as a “painful” incident, the chief minister offered condolences to the families of the victims.

“117 people are admitted 47 died. Sixty-six people have been were admitted to Kallakurichi Hospital, 32 to Salem Hospital, two persons are admitted to Villupuram Medical Hospital while 16 are in the Pondicherry JIPMER,” Stalin said.

There was a ruckus both inside and outside the Tamil Nadu Assembly in Chennai, as AIADMK members raised slogans demanding discussion on the Kallakurichi illicit liquor tragedy in which at least 47 persons have lost their lives.

Earlier, three accused in the Kallakurichi illicit liquor case were sent to 15 days of judicial custody and taken to Cudallore Central prison. The Kallakurichi police produced the accused before the district combined court.

Three accused named Govindaraj, Damadoran and Vijaya were sent to 15 days of judicial custody till July 5 by district court judge Sriram. The accused were sent to Cudallore Central Prison. (ANI)
