The deadline for applications for the position of chief coach of the Indian men’s cricket team concluded on Monday, with both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Gautam Gambhir, a top candidate, refraining from commenting on the matter.
Following his recent success in leading the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL trophy, Gautam Gambhir’s candidacy has gained significant attention. Despite the speculation, both Gautam Gambhir and the BCCI have maintained silence on the record.
The BCCI appears to have limited quality options at present. Notably, no prominent foreign candidates have applied for the position, likely influenced by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s preference for a candidate familiar with the domestic cricket structure.
VVS Laxman, the head of the National Cricket Academy and a primary target for the role, has expressed a lack of interest in a full-time position requiring ten months of availability annually.
“The deadline is fine, but the BCCI brass wouldn’t mind taking some more time before reaching a decision. Right now, the team will be busy with the World T20 for the better part of the month of June. After that, seniors will be rested from tours of Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe where any of the NCA-based senior coaches can accompany the team. So what’s the hurry,” a BCCI source told PTI under the condition of anonymity.
Further complicating the situation is Gautam Gambhir’s deep association with KKR, fostered by his strong relationship with principal owner Shah Rukh Khan. This bond may influence Gautam Gambhir’s decision regarding a potential departure from the IPL team, which has become a significant part of his identity.
Additionally, the opinions of senior Indian players currently in New York will be a crucial factor in determining whether Gautam Gambhir can effectively replace Rahul Dravid as head coach.
The BCCI remains cautious and deliberate in its approach, prioritizing thorough consideration over immediate action as the selection process for the next head coach continues.
