History

Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a beautiful place with green forests, rivers, and mountains. It’s perfect for a peaceful vacation.
A long time ago, the Marathas wanted to be friends with the Portuguese to help them against the Mughals. They made a deal in 1779. The Marathas said the Portuguese could collect money from Dadra and Nagar Haveli, which had 72 villages. This was because the Marathas had taken a Portuguese ship called ‘Santana,’ but they didn’t want to give it back. Before that, these places were ruled by Koli chiefs, but the Marathas took over.
In 1954, the people here freed themselves from the Portuguese. They started governing Dadra and Nagar Haveli on their own. In 1961, it became part of India.
Now, Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a lovely place where you can enjoy nature and a peaceful holiday.

Geography

Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a small union territory located in western India. It is situated between the states of Gujarat to the north and Maharashtra to the south. Covering an area of about 491 square kilometers, it is one of India’s smallest territories. The territory consists of two separate geographical entities, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, which are divided by the state of Gujarat. Dadra is located in the hilly region of the Western Ghats, while Nagar Haveli is a coastal plain. The terrain is predominantly hilly and forested, with the Daman Ganga River flowing through the region. The union territory is known for its natural beauty and is a popular destination for tourists. It is also home to various tribal communities and has a rich cultural heritage.

Land, People & Culture

Dadra and Nagar Haveli is in the western hills with lots of forests, making it look like a woodland. The Damanganga River and its smaller rivers flow through the area and go into the Arabian Sea. About 62% of the population are tribals, like the Varlies, Kokana, Dhodia, and Dublas. They have their own special culture with unique traditions and colorful stories. They love to dance, especially during important times like weddings and harvests. Some dances they do are Tarpa, Dhol, Bhavada, and Gherria. These dancers are also talented in other things and can take care of themselves in their daily lives.

Silvassa : The Capital of Serenity

Silvassa, the capital, is a perfect representation of the territory’s charm. The town is surrounded by lush greenery and dotted with serene lakes. The Tribal Cultural Museum in Silvassa offers a captivating insight into the culture and history of the region’s indigenous communities.

Festivals and Cuisine

The territory’s festivals, such as Tarpa Festival and Bhagoria, offer a glimpse into the traditional celebrations of the indigenous people. Sample the delectable tribal cuisine, rich in flavors and aromas, at local eateries for an authentic culinary experience.
