Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu is currently facing the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung which was originated in Bay of Bengal. The cyclone has created a chaos as it inflicted widespread damage with heavy rainfall and severe flooding in the city and suburbs, resulting in 5 casualties till now in the rain related incidents.
According to the weather experts, the cyclone will make landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Bapatla coast around noon and the wind speed near the coast will be as high as 100 kmph.
Heavy rains and flooding affected the life in the city. The cyclone has caused severe problems in the day to day life of the residents due to heavy rains, floods, water logging, halting transport services and many more.
Severe Water Logging:
Chennai’s most critical issue remains severe water logging. Streets, residential areas, and public spaces have been submerged, causing immense hardship for the local population. The city’s drainage systems have struggled to cope with the deluge, exacerbating the flooding and hampering relief efforts.
Heavy Rain and Flooding:
Cyclone Michaung unleashed torrents of heavy rain upon Chennai. The intensity of the downpour was such that a significant portion of the city received nearly an inch of rain overnight. This rapid accumulation of water led to widespread inundation, affecting countless homes and businesses.
Haltering Transport Services:
The cyclone’s impact severely disrupted operations at Chennai’s airport. The heavy rainfall submerged the airport’s runway, and strong winds created unsafe conditions for takeoffs and landings. Consequently, airport authorities were compelled to suspend operations on Monday evening. While operations resumed the following morning, the disruptions had already caused significant inconveniences for travellers.
Flight Cancellations and Diversions:
Chennai’s airport authorities were forced to cancel 70 flights and divert more than 30 others to Kempegowda Airport in Bengaluru city due to the cyclone’s impact. These disruptions in air travel compounded the chaos and logistical challenges faced by both passengers and airlines.
