In a series of operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, customs officials have intercepted multiple attempts to smuggle gold and foreign currency, leading to the arrest of several individuals. Over the span of July 1-9, authorities reported a significant uptick in smuggling cases, highlighting ongoing efforts to evade detection.

Six Indian nationals returning from Gulf countries, including Sharjah, Dubai, and Jeddah, were apprehended after customs checks revealed their attempts to smuggle gold worth crores into the country. The contraband, cleverly concealed in various forms such as gold dust mixed with wax, chains, and rods, collectively weighed around 5 kg. Smugglers employed ingenious tactics, hiding gold inside ball pen refills, spectacle boxes, and even on their person.

These arrests were part of a broader crackdown that saw a total of 22 smuggling incidents during the period. Customs officials confiscated over 16 kg of gold, valued at over ₹10 crore, along with foreign currency amounting to half a crore. The seized items underscore the scale and sophistication of smuggling operations targeting Mumbai Airport.

In separate incidents, 13 individuals arriving from Dubai, Muscat, and Sharjah were caught attempting to conceal gold within their clothing, luggage, and even between layers of papers. Additionally, a foreign national arriving from Sharjah was found with an undeclared gold chain weighing 260 grams.

Authorities also intercepted two individuals attempting to transport foreign currencies worth ₹48 lakh to Bangkok, concealed intricately between layers of cardboard pieces in a polythene bag. In a startling discovery onboard domestic flights, customs officials recovered four gold bars weighing a total of 467 grams, valued at ₹29 lakh, stashed under a seat on an IndiGo plane. On another flight, they found pouches containing gold dust worth over ₹2 crore hidden beneath life jackets on an Air India Express aircraft.

The allure of cheaper gold prices in Gulf nations continues to drive smuggling attempts, as traffickers seek to capitalize on price differentials for profit. The vigilance and swift actions of customs officials remain pivotal in thwarting such illicit activities, safeguarding national interests and curbing economic crimes.

The series of interceptions underscore the challenges faced by authorities in combating cross-border smuggling networks and the ongoing efforts to reinforce security measures at key international gateways like Mumbai Airport.
