In a recent turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a attack against the Bihar government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The controversy revolves around allegations of the government’s differential treatment of holidays for Hindu and Muslim festivals in the state’s schools. Union Minister Ashwini Choubey, in a strongly-worded statement, referred to Nitish Kumar as the “chief of appeasement” and accused the government of displaying an “anti-Hindu face” for the sake of political gains.
Holiday Calendar Sparks Outcry:
The crux of the controversy lies in the recent release of the Bihar education department’s holiday calendar for the year 2024. This calendar has triggered widespread debate and protests due to its perceived bias in the allocation of holidays for religious festivals.
Reduced Hindu Festivals Holidays:
One of the most striking aspects of the calendar is the reduction in the number of holidays earmarked for Hindu festivals such as Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, Ramanavami, Shivaratri, Teej, Vasant Panchami, and Jivi Putrika. Simultaneously, the calendar extends holidays for Muslim festivals, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (Bakrid), both of which are now set at three days each.
Political Dimensions:
This disparity in holiday allocation has raised serious concerns, with the BJP accusing the Nitish Kumar-led government of appeasing one community at the expense of another. The controversy is not new, as a similar situation unfolded earlier this year when the government, through an order dated August 29, attempted to curtail the number of holidays for schools from 22 to 8 over the next five months. This decision was met with massive opposition and was eventually withdrawn.
Union Minister’s Strong Words:
Union Minister Ashwini Choubey has not minced words in expressing his views on the matter, stating that Nitish Kumar’s government is compromising Hindu traditions for the sake of political interests. He remarked, “On one hand, holidays for Muslim festivals are being extended in schools, while holidays for Hindu festivals are being abolished.”
BJP warns of repercussions:
This controversy has taken on political dimensions, with the BJP warning of consequences for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in the upcoming elections if the decision is not reversed. Giriraj Singh, Union minister and BJP leader, emphasized the repercussions of such actions and commented, “In the future, they will be known as Mohammad Lalu Yadav, Mohammad Nitish Kumar.”
The controversy over the Bihar government’s holiday calendar highlights the delicate balance between religious sensitivities and political considerations. It remains to be seen how the government responds to the mounting pressure and whether it reevaluates its decision to ensure fairness and inclusivity in holiday allocation for all communities in the state.
