Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 11 (ANI): Assam Bharatiya Janata Party president Bhabesh Kalita hit out at Congress on the Bangladesh issue and said that Congress is now “silent” on the issue of atrocities against Hindu minority people in Bangladesh.

“Congress is silent in this issue,” Bhabesh Kalita said.

On the other hand, talking about the current situation in Bangladesh, the Assam State BJP president said that “we appeal to the new government of Bangladesh to provide safety and security of the Hindu minority people in the country.”

Bangladesh is facing a fluid political situation with Sheikh Hasina, tendering her resignation from her post on August 5 in the wake of mounting protests.

He further said that the BJP will field its two candidates for the polls of the Rajya Sabha for two seats in the state.

“We will field two party candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls in Assam. Other NDA partners will help us to secure both seats. From yesterday a 2-day crucial meeting of BJP North Eastern region held in Guwahati. Party Presidents of all North Eastern states, senior party leaders BL Santosh, MPs and other senior leaders were present in the meeting. During the meeting, issues of upcoming Panchayat polls, Rajya Sabha polls were discussed,” Kalita told ANI.

He further said that, tomorrow (Monday) another crucial party meeting will be held and Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma will also be present in the meeting.

The two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam feil vacant as the sitting members, Sarbananda Sonowal and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa were elected to the 18th Lok Sabha in April this year.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled elections for September 3 to fill 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in different states, including Assam. (ANI)
