New Delhi [India], August 19 (ANI): Citing National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, Congress leader Pawan Khera on Monday called for an investigation followed by a discussion into the “rising” graph of crime against women in the last ten years.

His reaction came amid nationwide protests against the murder and alleged sexual assault of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the West Bengal city of Kolkata on August 9. The rape and murder of a female trainee doctor has sent shock waves across the country.

“The NCRB data on crime against women in the last ten years (suggests that) the graph is rising. There should be an investigation into its reasons–a discussion,” the Congress leader told ANI.

He also expressed concern over the alleged cases of sexual assault of a woman resident doctor at the Sion Hospital in Mumbai by a drunk patient on August 18 and of a woman on a bus in Dehradun earlier in the year.

“We hope that all the accused will be arrested very soon,” he said.

On the murdered Kolkata doctor’s parents’ statement, Pawan Khera said, “It is a valid question as to how vandalisation took place in the hospital?… Answers to these questions must be given.”

On Sunday, the mother of the deceased doctor said that the police did not do a good job at all and the WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was trying to stop the protests.

She told ANI that the hospital officials first told her that her daughter had committed suicide.

“First we got a call from the hospital that your daughter is sick, then the call was disconnected. After that when I called and asked what happened, they told me to come to the hospital. When we called again, the (caller) identified himself as Assistant Super and said your daughter has committed suicide. She went to duty on Thursday, we got this call on Friday at 10:53 am. When we reached there, we were not allowed to see her, we were allowed to see her at 3 o’clock. Her pants were open, there was only one piece of cloth on her body. Her hand was broken, and blood was coming out of her eyes, and mouth. Just by looking at her, it seemed that someone had murdered her,” she said.

“One person has been arrested. I am sure many more are involved in this incident. I think the entire department is responsible for the incident… The police did not do a good job at all. I feel that the Chief Minister is trying to stop the protest, today she imposed Section 144 here so that people cannot protest,” she added.

Doctors have held protests in various states including Kolkata, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

The case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation from the state police following an order from the Calcutta High Court.

On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, sparking nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community. On August 14, the protest site and the hospital campus at RG Kar were vandalized by a mob, prompting security personnel to disperse the crowd.

To maintain law and order, Kolkata police have imposed Section 163 of the BNSS around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for seven days, effective from August 18. (ANI)
