Mallikarjun Kharge, the National President of the Congress party, rebuked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks regarding “Mangalsutra” at a rally in Rajasthan’s Banswara, condemning it as a divisive tactic.
Mallikarjun Kharge asserted that PM Modi’s strategy has consistently revolved around division rather than unity. He emphasized the importance of focusing on national progress rather than resorting to divisive rhetoric. “This has always been his tactic to divide. How to take the country forward is important. Leaving this aside, he is talking about Hindu-Muslim, Scheduled Caste, and Other Backward Caste. He is doing all this for votes, not for the benefit of the country,” Mallikarjun Kharge remarked.
During his address, PM Modi accused the Congress of aiming to seize the gold and property of citizens and distribute it among those with more children. He underscored the significance of the “Mangalsutra” for women, asserting that no government possesses the authority to confiscate it.
In response to PM Modi’s speech, the Congress party alleged deliberate and repeated attempts by the Prime Minister and the BJP to exploit religious symbols and sentiments in their election campaign, without regard for consequences.
Additionally, senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi announced that the party had submitted a petition to the Election Commission of India, urging for appropriate action against PM Modi for his recent remarks in Banswara, Rajasthan. Singhvi deemed the Prime Minister’s statement as “seriously, ridiculously objectionable,” highlighting its blatant invocation of religion and communal sentiments.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi emphasized the need for the Election Commission to uphold constitutional principles and ensure a level playing field for all parties. He called PM Modi’s speech a “very serious, uncalled-for invasion” of the Constitution’s basic structure and urged the ECI to take prompt action.
Meanwhile, Mallikarjun Kharge expressed confidence in the Congress party’s prospects in Karnataka, asserting that they are poised to secure more seats in the upcoming elections. He emphasized a shift in the electorate’s mindset, indicating a lack of support for the BJP in the state.
The Lok Sabha elections in India are being conducted in seven phases, from April 19 to June 1, to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha.
