In a significant development, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has thrown its weight behind the concept of simultaneous elections, emphasizing the potential for enhanced governance efficiency and a positive impact on economic development. The CII made its position clear during the fifth meeting of the One Nation, One Election committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind.
During the meeting, CII representatives presented their views on the economic advantages of streamlining the electoral process, asserting that it would lead to improved governance efficiency and foster economic development. The Law Ministry released a statement detailing the proceedings of the high-level panel’s discussion.
The CII has been advocating for simultaneous elections in India since 2012, citing the disruptive nature of asynchronous multiple elections. The industry body highlighted that the frequent interruptions in policy-making and administration, coupled with the engagement of government officials in election duties, have negative consequences. Furthermore, the CII pointed out that the private sector tends to slow down investment decisions in the lead-up to elections.
The endorsement of simultaneous elections by the CII aligns with its longstanding belief in the economic benefits of a synchronized electoral process. As the One Nation, One Election committee continues its deliberations, the CII’s stance adds a business perspective to the ongoing discourse surrounding electoral reforms in India. The committee, led by former President Kovind, remains a key forum for shaping the future trajectory of India’s electoral landscape.
Significantly, during the fifth meeting held yesterday, the Chairman of the Committee Ram Nath Kovind also held talks with various stakeholders in view of knowing their opinion on the subject. He also held an interaction today with Dr. Santosh Kumar Suman, Minister Government of Bihar & National Chairman, Hindustani Awaam Morcha, who presented the view of his party on holding simultaneous elections. Similarly as part of his consideration with political parties, HLC Chairman Kovind also held discussion with Rahul Shewale, MP, leader of Shiv Sena party (Eknath Sambhaji Shinde) Lok Sabha, MP Rajendra Gavit, MP Shrirang Barne and Ashish Kulkarni.
