China has been actively supporting Pakistan in enhancing its defence infrastructure along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir, underscoring the deep strategic partnership between the two nations. This multifaceted assistance includes the supply of advanced military equipment and significant infrastructure development.
Advanced Military Equipment
China has equipped Pakistan with sophisticated Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Combat Aerial Vehicles, crucial for surveillance and combat operations along the LoC. Notably, the SH-15, a 155 mm truck-mounted howitzer gun developed by China, has been deployed in the region. Pakistan secured a contract with the Chinese firm Norinco for 236 SH-15s, receiving the first batch in early 2022. This artillery, known for its mobility and precision, substantially boosts Pakistan’s firepower along the border.
Infrastructure Development
Chinese engineers and troops have been pivotal in constructing communication towers, laying underground cables, and building bunkers. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to bolster Pakistan’s defensive capabilities in the region. Despite the absence of high-ranking PLA officials at forward posts recently, Chinese military and engineering personnel have been active in developing infrastructure along the LoC, highlighting the strategic significance of this collaboration.
Strategic and Economic Interests
China’s involvement aims to reinforce its position as Pakistan’s steadfast ally and protect its investments in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The CPEC is a crucial element of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), connecting Gwadar Port to Xinjiang province. To safeguard these investments, China has established enclaves in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and deployed security forces to mitigate potential threats.
India’s Response and Concerns
India has raised strong objections to the Chinese presence in the Gilgit and Baltistan regions, emphasizing its readiness to counter any cross-border moves. The Indian Army remains vigilant, closely monitoring the developments and prepared to address any security challenges posed by the Sino-Pakistani cooperation.
China’s arms transfers to Pakistan are strategic, aiming to secure its regional interests and counterbalance India’s influence. Additionally, Chinese development in PoK and provision of military supplies further reflect its long-term strategic goals in South Asia.
The growing military collaboration between China and Pakistan along the LoC underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics in South Asia. As China continues to fortify Pakistan’s defense capabilities, India remains alert, prepared to safeguard its interests amidst this evolving security landscape.
