During his state visit to India, Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic reach, describing him as a global leader capable of engaging with world powers across diverse political spectrums. Speaking at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Tuesday, Gabriel Boric acknowledged India’s growing geopolitical influence and emphasized his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with India.
Gabriel Boric noted that PM Narendra Modi possesses a unique diplomatic stature, allowing him to communicate with leaders from opposing blocs, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, former US President Donald Trump, as well as leaders from the European Union and Latin America. “PM Narendra Modi has a weird status nowadays that he can talk to every leader of the world—Mr. Vladimir Putin, Mr. Trump, Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky—and the European Union, Latin American leaders in BRICS, or Iran,” Gabriel Boric stated. He further remarked that no other leader in the world currently enjoys such widespread access across geopolitical divides, making Narendra Modi a key player in global affairs.
The Chilean president also commended India’s democratic values, highlighting the country’s commitment to peace, poverty alleviation, and freedom of expression. “India is the biggest democracy in the world. In India, there is separation of powers. In India, there is freedom of expression. In India, you’re fighting against poverty and inequality. In India, you’re committed to peace in the world,” Gabriel Boric said, underscoring India’s role as a responsible global power.
As India and Chile mark 75 years of diplomatic ties, Gabriel Boric expressed his government’s eagerness to deepen cooperation with India across multiple sectors. He emphasized Chile’s global engagement strategy, stating, “Chile is a country that is connected to the world. We do not depend on one special country, but we have relationships with China, with the United States, with the European Union, with the countries from our region, Latin America, with the countries from Asia-Pacific—Japan, Indonesia, Australia—and now we want to work more deeply on our relationship with India.”
During his visit, several Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) were signed to enhance collaboration between the two nations. Gabriel Boric’s itinerary includes visits to Agra, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, apart from his engagements in Delhi. His discussions with Indian officials focus on trade, technology exchange, and cultural cooperation, further strengthening the partnership between the two nations.
Welcoming President Gabriel Boric, Indian President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the growing depth of India-Chile relations and highlighted areas of potential cooperation. She also praised Gabriel Boric’s political journey from student activism to national leadership, calling it an inspiration for many aspiring leaders worldwide. As Gabriel Boric’s visit continues, both nations are expected to explore new avenues of collaboration, reinforcing their long-standing diplomatic ties.
