Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu visited the Lord Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala on Friday, coinciding with the commencement of the annual Brahmotsavams. This traditional event attracts devotees from all over the country, and Chandrababu Naidu’s visit marked a significant moment amid ongoing controversies surrounding the temple’s offerings.

Accompanied by his wife, Chandrababu Naidu made a symbolic offering of “pattu vastrams” (silk robes) to the deity on behalf of the state government. The couple carried the silk garments on a golden plate atop their heads as they entered the temple through the main entrance, showcasing their devotion and respect for the temple rituals. After presenting the offerings, the temple’s chief priests honored Chandrababu Naidu by tying the Parivattam (sacred thread) around him, and he donned the traditional Thirunaamam on his forehead. TTD Executive Officer Shyamala Rao and Additional EO Venkaiah Chowdary further honored Chandrababu Naidu with Sri Vari’s Sesha Vastram (sacred cloth), marking the occasion with reverence and tradition.

Chandrababu Naidu’s visit came against the backdrop of a serious controversy involving the Tirupati temple’s laddu prasadam. Earlier that day, the Supreme Court ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into allegations that the previous Andhra Pradesh government had used substandard ghee containing animal fat for preparing the sacred laddus offered at the temple. This controversy has raised concerns among devotees, as the prasadam is a significant aspect of the temple’s offerings and holds great importance in the hearts of millions.

The SIT, which will be supervised by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), will comprise state police officers and a member from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The Supreme Court highlighted the gravity of the allegations, noting that they could potentially hurt the sentiments of people worldwide. Furthermore, the court stated that the SIT’s investigation would be closely monitored by the CBI director to ensure transparency and thoroughness.

As the Brahmotsavams unfold, the temple’s administration, along with state officials, will be keenly observed for their handling of the laddu controversy, which has already stirred significant public sentiment. The combination of Chandrababu Naidu’s ceremonial offering and the ongoing investigation underscores the complex interplay of faith, governance, and accountability in the realm of religious practices in India.
