Centre notifies appointment of two advocates as additional judges of Chhattisgarh HC

New Delhi [India], August 12 (ANI): The Ministry of Law and Justice notified the appointment of two lawyers as Additional Judges for the Chhattisgarh High Court on Monday.

Notification issued in this regard stated that, in the exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint (i) Bibhu Datta Guru and (ii) Amitendra Kishore Prasad, to be Additional Judges of the High Court of Chhattisgarh, in that order of seniority, for a period of two years with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.

On July 30, 2024, the Collegium consisting of Chief Justice of India Dr DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, and Justice BR Gavai recommended the appointment of advocates Bibhu Datta Guru and Amitendra Kishore Prasad as Judges of the Chhattisgarh High Court.

The Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court, along with his senior colleagues, had recommended their names in February 2024, with the concurrence of the Chief Minister and Governor of Chhattisgarh.

Collegium noted that the inputs provided by the Department of Justice in the file indicate that there is nothing adverse against the integrity of the candidate / Bibhu Datta Guru. He has appeared in a number of cases as reflected in 54 reported judgments delivered by the High Court in those cases. Bearing in mind all the relevant factors including the age and standing at the Bar of the candidate, the Collegium is of the considered view that the candidate is fit and suitable for appointment as a Judge of the High Court.

In regards to Amitendra Kishore Prasad alias A.K. Prasad, the inputs provided by the Department of Justice in the file indicate that the candidate enjoys a good personal and professional image and that nothing adverse to his integrity has come to notice.

The candidate has extensive practice which is reflected in 110 reported judgments delivered in the cases in which he has appeared. Bearing in mind all the relevant factors including the age and standing at the Bar of the candidate, the Collegium is of the considered view that the candidate is fit and suitable for appointment as a Judge of the High Court, stated Collegium.
