The centenary birth anniversary celebrations of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee commenced on Tuesday in Lucknow with the inauguration of the Atal Swasthya Mela. The event marks the beginning of a series of commemorative programs planned across the nation to honor the legacy of one of India’s most revered leaders. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, addressing the media, described the swasthya mela as the first in a series of events leading up to Vajpayee’s 100th birth anniversary on December 25, which is celebrated nationwide as Good Governance Day.
The celebrations gained further momentum in the evening with a tribute event titled Atal Geet Ganga, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as chief guests. Renowned poet Kumar Vishwas paid homage to Atal Bihari Vajpayee with a soulful rendition of songs inspired by the former prime minister’s life and works. These events are part of a broader initiative to recognize Vajpayee’s contributions to Indian politics, literature, and governance.
The Bharatiya Janata Party Minority Front has also planned a series of events under its banner to celebrate Vajpayee’s life and legacy. Jamal Siddiqui, the national president of the front, announced that Atal Smriti Sabhas will be organized at booths across various cities, where floral tributes will be offered, and Vajpayee’s poetry will be recited by young participants. These gatherings will also serve as a platform to highlight his achievements as a founding leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and his impactful tenure as prime minister. Discussions will focus on his government’s landmark initiatives and their lasting influence, as well as ongoing developmental programs under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A virtual meeting, chaired by senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, was held to finalize preparations for the celebrations. Dushyant Kumar Gautam, national general secretary, and Trilok Kapoor, state general secretary, outlined plans for tributes to be paid by President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other dignitaries during a special ceremony in Delhi. Kapoor also announced that year-long commemorative events would take place nationwide to honor Vajpayee’s vision, including symbolic walks along rural roads to commemorate the transformation brought by the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana. Schools and colleges will engage students with poetry recitations and other programs based on Vajpayee’s literary contributions.
The centenary celebrations aim to pay homage to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s unparalleled leadership and enduring influence on India’s political and cultural landscape.
