  • CBSE opens office in Tripura after poor exam performance.
  • New office to support schools with resources and assistance.

In response to the underwhelming performance of Tripura’s state-run CBSE-affiliated schools in recent board examinations, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced plans to open a sub-regional office in Agartala. The move follows a significant public outcry in Tripura after only 61% of students in these schools passed their Class 10 CBSE exams, while the pass rate for Class 12 exams was even lower, at 59%. This new CBSE office aims to address academic challenges and improve support for affiliated schools, marking a pivotal shift in the state’s educational landscape.

Tripura’s state-run schools were previously under the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) with a Bengali-medium curriculum. However, in 2018, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) rise to power, the state government introduced the CBSE’s English-medium curriculum as part of its Vidyajyoti Schools initiative, converting 125 state schools to the CBSE syllabus. While this transition was intended to raise educational standards, the latest exam results indicate persistent challenges. Concerns have been raised about the adjustments required for students to adapt to the new English-medium CBSE curriculum, which has highlighted the need for enhanced support and resources.

According to Abhijit Samajpati, the Education Department’s Officer on Special Duty (OSD), the Tripura government has pledged to provide suitable land for the new CBSE office, which will initially operate from a building at the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya in Agartala. Samajpati noted that the establishment of the office is an essential step in strengthening educational infrastructure in the state, with a focus on improving student outcomes and addressing administrative needs.

The sub-regional office in Agartala will offer a range of services to support CBSE-affiliated schools, including assistance with admissions, student record updates, exam center coordination, mark sheet corrections, and subject corrections. Additionally, it will provide grievance redressal for students, teachers, and parents, as well as facilitating teacher training programs aimed at helping educators meet CBSE standards. By working closely with the Tripura state education bodies and other regional educational institutions, the office aims to ensure the smooth functioning of exams and student development activities across the state.

The decision to set up a CBSE office in Tripura signifies a commitment to bolstering support for English-medium education and providing the necessary resources for both students and teachers. As CBSE collaborates with local education bodies, there is hope that future exam results will reflect improved performance and adaptation to the new curriculum. This initiative underscores the state and central governments’ dedication to advancing educational standards in Tripura and addressing the unique challenges posed by the recent shift in academic direction.
