Prime Minister Narendra Modi is poised to lead the government for a third consecutive term following the resounding victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, securing a simple majority in the 543-member lower house.
With the BJP securing 240 seats, surpassing the 272-majority mark with support from its coalition partners, the NDA has emerged as the dominant force in the new parliament. In contrast, the opposition Indian National Congress, part of the INDIA alliance, secured 99 seats, while the INDIA bloc, exceeding initial expectations, garnered over 200 seats.
The process of government formation commences today with the convening of the Union Cabinet meeting, where the recommendation for the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha will be proposed. Subsequently, President Droupadi Murmu will initiate the dissolution process and commence the constitution of the 18th Lok Sabha.
President Droupadi Murmu will host a farewell dinner for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Union Council of Ministers at Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking the conclusion of the current administration’s term. As the NDA, commanding 292 seats, prepares to form the government for a third term, attention shifts to potential engagements with key political figures.
Key figures such as Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Chief Chandrababu Naidu and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar are expected to convene in Delhi for meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders. The NDA and INDIA bloc will hold concurrent meetings in the national capital, with discussions revolving around coalition strategies and alliances.
The INDIA bloc, despite facing numerical challenges, will strategize on potential avenues for government formation, with a focus on engaging former allies like the JD(U) and TDP. Notably, Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee has indicated her inability to attend the INDIA bloc meeting, with party representative Abhishek Banerjee set to participate in her stead.
Emphasizing the importance of consensus-building, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi underscored the collective decision-making process of the INDIA bloc, expressing confidence in reaching collaborative resolutions. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge echoed this sentiment, affirming the party’s commitment to engaging with both existing and prospective alliance partners.
As deliberations unfold in the national capital, the political landscape remains dynamic, with alliances and strategies shaping the trajectory of government formation in the coming days.
