Budgetary Allocation and Policy Decision
In a significant move, the Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) for a period of five years, starting from January 1, 2024. This decision is accompanied by an estimated expenditure of Rs. 11.80 lakh crore, making it one of the world’s largest social welfare initiatives aimed at ensuring food and nutrition security for vulnerable sections of society.
Enhancements and Continuation
Under the revamped PMGKAY, approximately 81.35 crore beneficiaries will continue to receive free food grains, including rice, wheat, and coarse grains/millets, for the next five years. This extension aims to strengthen food security and mitigate financial hardship for the poor and vulnerable segments of the population. Additionally, the scheme will facilitate ease of living by enabling beneficiaries to access free food grains from any fair price shop nationwide under the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) initiative.
About the Scheme
The PMGKAY is a flagship scheme aimed at providing food and nutrition security to millions of disadvantaged individuals across India. By leveraging the PM Jan Dhan accounts and Fair Price Shops, the scheme ensures the timely and efficient distribution of free food grains to the targeted population. Furthermore, the initiative aligns with the government’s vision of building an aspirational and developed India by addressing the basic needs of the populace.
Benefits and Impact
The extension of PMGKAY for five years will have far-reaching benefits for the targeted population. It will not only alleviate hunger and malnutrition but also empower beneficiaries to lead a dignified life. The scheme’s emphasis on accessibility, affordability, and availability of food grains underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive growth and social welfare. Moreover, the provision of free food grains will result in substantial savings for ration card holders, ensuring financial relief for millions of households across the country.
