A British tourist, Peter Smith, who sustained serious injuries in a shark attack off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago, is reportedly showing signs of improvement, his wife confirmed.
The incident occurred approximately 10 meters from the shore near the Starfish Hotel in Courland Bay, Tobago, on Friday morning. Peter Smith, 64, remains hospitalized in intensive care on the island, having sustained injuries to his left arm and leg, puncture wounds to the abdomen, and injuries to his right hand.
His wife, Jo Smith, provided an update, stating that as of Sunday morning, Peter is conscious and able to communicate to some extent, albeit while still under the influence of strong medication. She expressed gratitude to those who provided assistance during the incident, particularly acknowledging the bravery of friends who aided in fending off the shark.
The Smiths, hailing from Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, were vacationing on the Caribbean island with friends and had plans to return home on the day of the attack.
According to reports from the Tobago House of Assembly, the shark involved in the incident is believed to be a bull shark, measuring approximately 8-10 feet in length and 2 feet in width. Following the attack, authorities temporarily closed seven beaches and a marine park along the northwestern coast of Tobago as a precautionary measure.
Eyewitness Orion Jakerov, watersports manager at the Starfish Resort, recounted the harrowing event, noting that Mr. Smith was in waist-deep water when the shark attacked. He commended the efforts of fellow beachgoers who bravely intervened to deter the shark during the attack.
The British Foreign Office has stated that it is providing support to the Smith family during this challenging time.
Incidents of shark attacks are relatively rare, with last year recording 69 unprovoked attacks and 22 provoked bites worldwide, resulting in 14 fatalities, according to data from the International Shark Attack File based in Florida.
