In a joint statement, Brazil and China urged peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing the need for both countries’ participation. The document, signed by Celso Amorim, a special advisor to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, underscored negotiation as the sole viable solution to the Ukraine crisis.
The statement endorsed an international peace conference, proposed at an appropriate time agreeable to both Russia and Ukraine, with equal involvement of all concerned parties. Emphasizing fair discussions on various peace plans, Brazil and China positioned themselves as advocates for inclusive dialogue.
While dozens of countries are preparing for a summit in June to pave the way for peace in Ukraine, notably, Russia has not been invited. In their statement, Brazil and China urged adherence to three principles for de-escalating the situation: no expansion of the battlefield, no escalation of fighting, and no provocation by any party.
Furthermore, the joint declaration rejected the use of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear, chemical, and biological arms. The nations stressed the importance of preventing nuclear proliferation and averting a nuclear crisis through concerted efforts.
