  • BMC deploys 2,650 RMC trucks for roadworks before monsoon.

With the monsoon season fast approaching, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched an aggressive drive to complete concrete roadworks across Mumbai. Determined to offer smoother and safer commutes, the civic body has deployed thousands of Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) trucks and is working day and night to ensure durable, pothole-free roads ahead of the 2025 rains.

Between April 17 and April 23, 2025, BMC deployed 2,650 RMC mixer trucks, averaging 378 trucks per day. This effort helped lay over 18,560 cubic metres of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC), a special high-strength mix used to build roads that can withstand Mumbai’s heavy traffic and harsh weather. Senior officials are personally monitoring the work across city limits, eastern suburbs, and western suburbs to maintain speed and quality.

Night shifts to avoid traffic and ensure quality

Most roadworks are being conducted at night to minimise daytime traffic congestion. BMC has ramped up site inspections and quality checks to ensure only the best materials and techniques are used. Contractors failing to meet standards are facing penalties and strict action, reflecting the civic body’s zero-tolerance stance toward substandard work.

Ready-Mix Concrete is playing a crucial role in maintaining quality and speed. Prepared at batching plants and transported in rotating drums to keep the mixture fresh, RMC ensures that the roads laid are strong and consistent. Officials have stressed that this method helps in achieving uniformity and durability across all project sites.

Strong foundation for a smoother monsoon commute

BMC aims to complete maximum concrete roadworks by May 31, 2025, well before the arrival of the monsoon. The use of Pavement Quality Concrete, calculated based on road dimensions, ensures a solid and long-lasting foundation for Mumbai’s busy roads. In just a week, 18,560 cubic metres of PQC have been poured, signaling steady progress.

In previous years, the civic body faced criticism for potholes despite various repair methods. However, this year’s focus on extensive concreting is expected to significantly reduce pothole issues. By strengthening the roads before the rains, BMC hopes to provide Mumbaikars with a safer, smoother driving experience during the challenging monsoon months and beyond.
