The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is stepping up its efforts to regain ground in Jharkhand following a significant loss in the Lok Sabha elections, where it failed to secure any of the five reserved seats—Khunti, Singhbhum, Lohardaga, Rajmahal, and Dumka. The party’s defeat was marked by a substantial margin in most constituencies, compelling it to strategize anew for the upcoming assembly elections. The BJP is now targeting ten reserved seats in a bid to reverse its fortunes.
In the wake of the election loss, the BJP has pivoted its focus towards appealing to tribal communities and addressing issues that resonate with them. One of the party’s notable moves was the grand celebration of Hul Divas on June 30, a day honoring tribal leaders Sidhu-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano for their contributions to India’s independence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the occasion to emphasize the historical significance of the day and the courage of the tribal leaders.
Despite facing criticism from Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who accused the BJP of being feudal, the BJP has remained undeterred. The party has actively commemorated the day in various tribal regions, moving celebrations from the state capital Ranchi to other locations like Mirudih and Chandil, thereby amplifying its outreach.
A major aspect of the BJP’s campaign strategy involves addressing concerns about demographic shifts in tribal areas. The party has highlighted the alleged influx of Bangladeshi nationals in Jharkhand’s reserved seats, citing a 2023 report from the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) that noted law and order issues linked to this demographic change. The BJP’s narrative has been bolstered by recent judicial orders and political discussions emphasizing the impact of these shifts on tribal populations.
In addition to raising concerns about demographic changes, the BJP has seized the opportunity to promote its stance on tribal rights. On August 9, World Tribals Day, the party organized outreach efforts in tribal areas, integrating with local celebrations rather than hosting grand events. Prime Minister Modi also met with BJP MPs from Scheduled Castes and Tribes to address concerns about reservations, stressing that the principle of the creamy layer does not apply to these reservations.
Home Minister Amit Shah further reinforced the BJP’s commitment to tribal issues during a recent executive committee meeting in Ranchi. He criticized the current administration for allegedly promoting policies he termed “Land Jihad,” accusing it of causing adverse demographic changes. Shah’s remarks underscore the BJP’s strategy to appeal to tribal voters by emphasizing its historical role in promoting tribal representation and addressing land and quota concerns.
As the BJP gears up for the assembly elections, its approach reflects a dual strategy: leveraging tribal sentiments and addressing allegations of demographic changes to solidify its position in Jharkhand.
